I wanted to draw your attention to a fantastic paper: Stereoscopy in Surgical Neuroanatomy: Past, Present and Future, particularly the sections: ‘From the Stereoscope to the ViewMaster: Neuroanatomical Applications’, ‘The Evolution of Stereoscopic Photography in Neurosurgery’, and ‘Future Directions’.
The authors have reflected on the history and use of stereoscopic principles and photography in medical training; from the 1905 ‘Stereoscopic Studies of Anatomy’, to the current volumetric models, and the future of lightfield displays, with a focus on neuroanatomy.
It’s an approachable and informative paper highlighting a significant aspect of the importance of stereoscopy. I would like to thank Dr. Roberto Rodriguez Rubio for his permission to share the paper, and to congratulation him and his co-authors on their work.
Roberto Rodriguez Rubio MD, Rina Di Bonaventura MD, Ioannis Kournoutas BS, Dania Barakat BA, Vera Vigo MD, Ivan El-Sayed MD, Adib A. Abla MD, ‘Stereoscopy in Surgical Neuroanatomy: Past, Present and Future‘, Operative Neurosurgery, Vol. 18, No. 2, Feb. 2020, p105-117.
The paper is an Open Access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution, Non-Commercial, No Derivs licence.
Scan from The Edinburgh Stereoscopic Atlas of Anatomy, collection of Denis Pellerin. Whilst this page isn’t related to neuroanatomy, it highlights the role of stereoscopic photography in medical training (and the neuroanatomy section was too graphic to share).
Happy #StereoscopyDay
